FJDynamics Trion P2 LiDAR Scanner in handheld use

Turn a Site Walkthrough Into Survey-Grade Data

Handheld scanning has traditionally forced a trade-off. Moving fast usually means losing positional accuracy, while staying accurate usually means staying still. The Trion P2 – X3 closes that gap because it never relies on a single source of truth for its position, and instead cross-checks itself continuously as it moves.

The dual 12 MP cameras and onboard IMU each track motion independently, one visually and one inertially, and because they measure movement in fundamentally different ways, errors in one are corrected by the other in real time through Visual-Inertial Odometry. This is what allows the scanner to hold its bearings in stairwells, basements, and long corridors, since these are environments where GPS drops out and where a single-sensor system would normally drift.

SLAM algorithms then take that continuously corrected position data and use it to stitch each new frame onto the growing map as the operator walks, so the scanner never needs to stop and re-anchor at fixed stations the way traditional terrestrial scanners do. The RTK module ties this entire process to real-world coordinates from the outset, which means the map being built during the walkthrough is already georeferenced rather than needing to be registered afterwards. It's this layered approach, with inertial and visual tracking correcting each other while SLAM maintains spatial continuity and RTK anchors it to real coordinates, that lets the Trion P2 – X3 deliver survey-grade output at walking pace, in exactly the low-feature, GPS-denied conditions where handheld scanning normally struggles most.

Workflow Advantages

  • Handheld, walk-and-scan capture — Move through a site at your own pace, confident that every step you take is contributing to a complete, usable dataset.
  • Georeferenced point cloud output — Hand off data that's already positioned correctly in the real world, so you're not the one explaining discrepancies back at the office.
  • Visual-Inertial Odometry — Take on basements, tunnels, and multi-storey builds without the uncertainty of a dropped GPS signal compromising your data.
  • SLAM-based mapping — Trust that the model is coming together accurately as you walk, so you can focus on covering the site instead of second-guessing the capture.
  • Reliable performance in low-feature environments — Take on car parks, warehouses, and plant rooms that would trip up less capable systems, with confidence the data will hold up.
  • Dual 12 MP cameras — Back up your point cloud with clear reference imagery, so nothing gets lost or misread once the data leaves your hands.
  • 2 kg handheld weight — Get through a full day on site without the fatigue that comes from carrying bulkier scanning rigs floor to floor.
  • Quick battery swap — Move from one job straight into the next without losing momentum waiting on a charger.
  • Messenger-bag portability — Get equipment in and out of vehicles and site access points quickly, without the extra bulk of a hard case.

Why Kyro Machines Recommends FJDynamics

FJD builds equipment specifically for professional surveying and geospatial capture, and the Trion series reflects that focus. Kyro Machines only offers equipment we've assessed against the standards our customers actually work to, so being part of our range means it's held up to that scrutiny. As an Australian-based supplier, we provide local after-sales support, so help is on hand if you have questions about setup, workflow, or servicing once the machine is in your hands.

Key Features

  • Combines camera, IMU, and RTK positioning in a single handheld unit for continuous data capture
