FJDynamics Trion P2 LiDAR Scanner in handheld use

Capture Survey-Grade 3D Scans Without Setting Up Equipment

Most handheld scanners lose accuracy the moment GNSS signal weakens, because they depend on satellite positioning alone to know where they are in space. The Trion P2 X5 solves this by fusing three data sources, RTK, an integrated IMU and Visual-Inertial Odometry, so that when satellite signal drops the device doesn't stop tracking but switches to reading motion and visual landmarks instead. This is why the scanner can walk from an open outdoor site straight into a stairwell or basement without losing its position.

The IMU tracks physical movement in real time, while the VIO system cross-references that movement against visual features captured by the dual 12 MP cameras. SLAM algorithms then take this continuous stream of positional data and build it into a single coherent point cloud, rather than a series of disconnected scans that need to be manually stitched together afterward. The result is a scanner that stays accurate not because it has one strong sensor, but because it never relies on just one.

When RTK weakens, VIO and IMU carry the positioning load, and the same happens in reverse. This is also why the unit can stay at 2 kg, since the processing does the heavy lifting rather than additional hardware bulk. For a field worker moving between site conditions in a single session, that redundancy is what keeps the walkthrough continuous instead of forcing a stop and restart every time the environment changes.

Workflow Advantages

  • Handheld, 2 kg design — Move through a site at walking pace and cover more ground in a day, without the fatigue or setup time of tripod-based equipment.
  • Integrated RTK module — Deliver survey-grade positioning confidently, knowing the data you hand over will hold up against client or regulatory scrutiny.
  • VIO and SLAM-based tracking — Keep working through GNSS-denied environments like basements and covered structures, without the frustration of losing position or having to restart a scan.
  • Continuous indoor-outdoor operation — Complete a full site walkthrough, exterior to interior, in one uninterrupted session, so the job stays efficient rather than fragmented.
  • Dual 12 MP cameras — Hand over scans with visual context attached, making it easier to explain findings clearly to clients, engineers, or project teams.
  • Georeferenced point cloud output — Feed data straight into existing survey and BIM workflows, saving the time and risk of manual alignment.
  • Quick battery swaps — Keep scanning through a full day on site without watching the clock or cutting a job short to recharge.
  • Messenger bag portability — Get equipment to remote or difficult-access sites without the physical strain of carrying bulky gear, so you arrive ready to work.
  • Sensor fusion reliability — Trust the accuracy of every scan, knowing the device doesn't depend on a single point of failure to maintain position.
